About Austin Woodworks

At Austin Woodworks, we have been woodworkers for over 20 years. For the last 10 years we have concentrated on practical kitchen items. In the past 5 years we have expanded to include our Hang Five™ product line.

We found there was a need for kitchen tools that are ergonomic, functional and aesthetically pleasing. Tools made by hand to fit the hand.

We start with rough cut lumber, mostly domestic hardwoods, oak, maple, rosewood, cherry, and or black walnut. All of the cutting, shaping and finishing is crafted in our own wood shop. We use too many tools to describe, but the basic process is this:

  - Products are rough cut on a band saw.
  - Additional shaping with routers.
  - Most of the sculpting is done with an edge sander.
  - Final sculpting is done with a soft drum sander.
  - Water sanding for an exceptionally smooth surface.
  - Hand rubbing on a natural finish at the end.

We find that creating kitchen tools made by hand to fit the hand, is a satisfying way of combining art, craftmanship and utility. Five years ago we added our "just for fun" Hang Five™ products, with their distinctive surfboard shape:
  - Hang Five™ Peg Racks (in 3 sizes)
  - Hang Time Desk and Wall Clocks
  - Hang Hair Barrettes (in an attractive gift box)
  - Hang Five™ Refrigerator Magnets
      (plus Necklaces and Key Chains)
  - Hang Five™ Towel Bars and Paper Towel Holders
  - Hang Five™ Peg Shelf

The process for making our products is basically the same, but we also laminate together different woods, prior to the sculpting process.

We then use a silk screen press to screen a design onto the peg racks and clocks. On all products the fin is set into the board. The smaller products (magnets, barettes, and necklaces) have rocker and rail configurations just like a real board. All these products, though primarily popular near the coast, have expanded our customer base to include kids of all ages.
